Furneys Electrolyte Replacer is a convenient and palatable method of ensuring your horse has adequate electrolytes to assist with the hydration of cells within the body. Sodium, potassium chloride, calcium and magnesium are minerals that are collectively termed electrolytes. These minerals along with others break down into ions when dissolved in water. The ions then assist with the movement of fluids in and out of cells, nutrient absorption and the regulation of the total fluid balance of the horse’s body. Roles such as these are vital for normal everyday nerve and muscle function.

A loss of electrolytes can cause many health disturbances in horses including cramping and tying up. When sweating for prolonged periods of time whether it is from exercise, heat, or during transport, large quantities of these electrolytes are lost. While electrolytes are available in forage and a balanced diet, options for a horse to naturally replace electrolytes after prolonged sweating may not be available or sufficient. It is recommended that horses are given electrolytes during strenuous exercise or when profuse sweating occurs and shortly after to replenish their electrolytes.
